Week One
During the first week we have been taking a close look at some of the command terms:
- Identifying
- interpreting
- analyzing
- evaluating
Week Two
Wring a Towel in Space:
Read the poem
Watch the video
Poetry is everywhere. It is just how we perceive, identify, interpret it. The poem below is an example of that.
"A Noiseless Patient Spider"
Notice how Whitman takes a simple observation and turns it into something profound. Use this poem to practice identifying poetic elements.

Poetry Writing Assignment: I Noticed Poem
An “I Noticed” Poem
Whitman’s poem “A Noiseless Patient Spider” and the poem “In Space” take a simple observation and turn it into a profound (at least for the poets) understanding.
In paragraph (prose) form, write about something you have witnessed. Maybe you have already seen something that you thought was cool or profound. Write about (make up: send that filament, filament, filament flying) a metaphorical meaning for what you observed.
Then, turn that prose into a poem by cutting, revising, rewriting. Basically, shape it like a poem.
If you really struggle with the first part, read “The Death of a Moth” by Virginia Woolf; turn it into a poem.
Here is a link to the assignment with my own example.
Below is the file for download and viewing of the presentation on "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry." Of course, they won't be nearly as meaningful without my charming insights.
